In May 1839, while Anson Call was traveling toward Warsaw, Illinois, he unexpectedly encountered Joseph and Hyrum Smith, who had recently escaped from their captors in Missouri. When Call asked how they had managed to escape their enemies, Joseph Smith testified to the power of divine intervention, stating, 'I will say in short to you, the prayers of the brethren brought me here.' Joseph indicated he was in great haste as his enemies were still pursuing him, but he attributed his physical deliverance directly to the collective faith and prayers of the Saints.
