Community Leadership in Wellsville Cooperative

In July 1871, John Mark Hendry and Margaret moved to the 'Mill Hendry Farm' about two and one-half miles north of Wellsville, where he accumulated a large fertile farm. He established himself as a community leader, managing the Wellsville Cooperative in 1874 (a large, flat, one-story building). On June 5, 1877, at a special meeting held at Wellsville, John Hendry and Evan Osen were ordained and set apart to act as first and second counselors respectively to Bishop William H. Haughan, who had served alone since November 1859. In 1880, John served as chairman of the People's Party in Wellsville to nominate candidates for election, and was appointed treasurer of Wellsville City on March 6, 1882, with an annual salary of $25. His service exemplified inspired wisdom and sustained support to his community.
