George Q. Cannon — The St. George Temple Foundation Miracle

During the construction of the St. George Temple in the early 1870s, the builders encountered a serious problem with the swampy, unstable ground at the site. George Q. Cannon, serving as a counselor in the First Presidency, witnessed the 'miraculous' solution where an old cannon from the Mexican War was repurposed as a pile driver to stabilize the foundation. Despite the presence of rattlesnakes, mosquitoes, and Gila monsters, the Saints viewed the successful completion of the foundation in such forbidding terrain as a collective miracle of divine providence and ingenuity.
