A Divine Voice Warns Mosiah Three Times — Saving His Life from Six Armed Navajos

During a return journey from a mission to the Moquis (Hopi) Indians in the winter of 1862-1863, Mosiah Hancock went back alone on foot to find a missing pack horse. Six armed Navajo warriors — including the man who had killed a young member of his party weeks earlier — surrounded him in a narrow mountain pass.

Three times during the encounter, Mosiah heard a distinct voice call out to him:

'I heard a voice say, "Mosiah, remember the fate of George A. Smith."' [As he approached hostile Indians]

Again the voice said: 'Mosiah, remember the fate of George A. Smith.' [As more surrounded him]

A third time: 'Again that voice said, "Mosiah, remember the fate of George A. Smith."' [As he was about to hand his revolver to the spokesman]

Mosiah recognized the third warning as decisive. He pulled back, faced down all six men with two cocked revolvers, backed toward his horse, and escaped through the dark into the snowy night. His companions had given him up for dead.

'When I got nearer, I could hear voices say, "He has gone as George A. Smith went. It was a shame to let him go alone that way." They were coming to look for me, and as they came near me, they gave a shout of joy.'
