While serving as a young missionary in Hawaii, George Q. Cannon sought divine guidance while praying in a garden behind the home of a woman named Nalimanui. During this experience, he received a powerful manifestation where he heard the voice of God 'more than once as one man speaks with another.' Cannon described this as the establishment of a sacred friendship with the Father, noting that God condescended to commune with him during a time when he felt he had no other friend to lean upon.
