Robert S. Harper, a new Church member who moved to Lincoln, was unable to locate the missionaries despite searching for a week. He became severely ill with a high fever and aches, and prayed for help. The next day, Elders William Howard and H. C. Wood, who had been misdirected by a porter and subsequently felt prompted to go tracting instead of staying in their lodge, encountered Harper's employer. The employer directed them to Harper's sickbed. The elders administered to Harper, and he immediately felt better; by the following morning, he was recovered enough to return to work.
In Their Own Words
“I was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the 22nd of November, 1908, in the town of Hull. My business has called me to Lincoln. For over a week I tried to find the elders, who I was told were laboring here, but could not locate them. On the 10th ult. I was taken very ill. I was alone in my lodge. I prayed that in some way I might find the elders. At two p.m. the following day, while lying in bed aching from head to foot, and burning with fever, Elders William Howard and H. C. Wood walked into my bedroom. I at once asked them to administer to me, which they did, and from that moment I began to get better. They stayed about two hours, and after praying for me they left, saying they would return in the evening. They did so, and when they bade me good-night they said they would call on me next day. I had a good night's rest. I arose at 8:30 the following morning, and felt well enough to start on my business again. I went out and surprised the elders by calling on them, just as they were getting ready to come to see me. This experience has strengthened my faith in the gospel of Christ, and has made me very happy. I rejoice in being a member of the Church, and am thankful to my Heavenly Father that I have had the privilege of seeing the light.”
