During a tense home birth, a baby was born blue and appeared unresponsive. Dr. Harry Bennet performed a miraculous resuscitation, transferring the baby between hot and cold water repeatedly while working ceaselessly until the baby finally burst into a lusty cry, which Dr. Harry and Maryethel attributed to divine intervention.

In Their Own Words

“Mutely, helplessly, Maryethel stood by and watched Dr. Harry perform the miracle of resuscitation. From the dishpan to the sink, from the sink back to the dishpan he transferred the small, red-blue morsel of humanity. Dripping with perspiration, he worked ceaselessly, and before Maryethel’s eyes flashed the lives and occupations of her two suitors. ... A final dip, a resounding slap, and Dr. Harry’s face a wreath of smiles as the baby burst into a lusty cry. “Thank God!” muttered Dr. Harry under his breath, and to Maryethel he added, “Now sit here by the oven door and keep her covered and warm.” — The Young Woman's Journal 39:10”
