During a sacrament meeting at the Nottingham Branch on Sunday, October 24, 1880, after the confirmation of new members, the gift of tongues was manifested. The account describes the manifestation as powerful, consoling, and encouraging to the Saints present, while also delivering a prophecy regarding upcoming distress, sorrow, and mourning for the wicked.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

NOTTINGHAM.—Elder Oscar F. Hunter writes from Nottingham, Oct. 26, 1880: 'We are having a good time in this branch. In our sacrament meeting Sunday afternoon, after the confirmation was over, we were blessed by the gift of tongues, which was very powerful, consoling and encouraging to the Saints, but predicting distress, sorrow and mourning for the wicked and rebellious. The Spirit of the Lord was poured out upon us in a marked degree, and we felt that it was good to be there.'

In Their Own Words

“In our sacrament meeting Sunday afternoon, after the confirmation was over, we were blessed by the gift of tongues, which was very powerful, consoling and encouraging to the Saints, but predicting distress, sorrow and mourning for the wicked and rebellious. — Millennial Star 42:45”
