Following a period of severe financial ruin during the 1893 panic, President Heber J. Grant returned home after midnight. His wife, concerned for his health, initially scolded him but then began speaking in tongues, providing him with a blessing. Neither understood the meaning initially, but after they prayed, the Lord granted the interpretation to her. The interpretation promised he would live to pay all his debts and proclaim the Gospel in many lands, a prophecy he testifies was fulfilled.
According to the account in the Young Woman's Journal, Lucy also specifically told Heber that his work habits constituted a more severe violation of the Word of Wisdom than if he had been consuming coffee or tea. A later biographical sketch adds that the interpretation of the blessing also explicitly promised that he would possess a 'comfortable home' in addition to paying off his debts and proclaiming the Gospel in many lands.
In Their Own Words
“My wife was waiting for me, and she started to lecture me, saying that I was breaking the Word of Wisdom. She suddenly stopped, and by the gift of tongues she gave me a most remarkable and wonderful blessing and promised me that I should live to pay off all my debts, which I did live to do.— Heber J. Grant, Young Woman's Journal 16:128”
