Brother Schulze, a member of the Leipzig branch, demonstrated strong faith and deep knowledge of the Gospel, leading James L. McMurrin and President Schulthess to ordain him an Elder and set him apart as a missionary.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 63, No. 16, April 18, 1901, page 249):
Another deserving member is Brother Schulze of the Leipzig branch. What Brother Beck has been to the Frieberg branch, the latter has been to that of Leipzig. Now he comes forward and volunteers to serve as a missionary like the Elders from Zion. There is great need of more laborers in this field, so we did not hesitate to ordain him an Elder and set him apart as a missionary. He has a good knowledge of the Gospel, the means at hand necessary for the work, and strong faith in the Lord, so we said to him, ‘thrust in your sickle and reap.’
