Isabella Blake, president of the Glasgow branch Relief Society, was unexpectedly called upon to speak at a street meeting held by the branch president. She bore her testimony as a Scottish woman and a Latter-day Saint, speaking to an audience of hundreds who listened attentively. She discussed the Relief Society's work, including their contributions to Red Cross efforts, the patriotism of the Saints, and the equal role of women in the Church.
In her own report regarding the event, Isabella Blake notes that the branch president introduced her not only as the president of the Relief Society but specifically as the 'convener of the Red Cross Work Party.' Additionally, she describes the crowd's reaction, stating that when she stepped forward, 'the people flocked round,' and she highlights that her message reached them in an environment where not a single person moved away, comparing the orderliness of the crowd to that of a cathedral congregation.
In Their Own Words
“We had a fine time on Sunday night... the president quite unexpectedly called on me to speak, introducing me as president of our Relief Society, and also convener of the Red Cross Work Party. When I went forward the people flocked round. I bore my testimony to them as a Scotchwoman and citizen of Glasgow. I was accorded splendid attention, not a person moving away. I was able to deliver my message... to an audience of hundreds, who were just as attentive and orderly as if they had been inside a cathedral. — Isabella Blake, in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78, No. 26 (1916)”
