After two months of investigating the Church, Mollie Higginson prayed for a testimony of the truth of 'Mormonism.' That same night, she received a distinct assurance in her soul that the Church was the true Church of God. Later, while sitting by the deathbed of a non-member friend, she experienced a profound sense of peace and understanding regarding the friend's future salvation through baptism for the dead, a concept she had learned from the Church.
In Their Own Words
“The first time I met with the elders, I followed their advice, and prayed to God for a testimony of the truth, and that same night, in answer to earnest prayer, I received the assurance within my soul that the "Mormon" Church was, indeed, the Church of God. I had been investigating for two months, and had read many of the tracts, but it was not until I had humbled myself and asked the Father for a witness that I received the knowledge that I so much desired. Since that time, I have had many proofs of the divinity of the work. I remember, in particular, an experience I had while sitting by the bedside of a dear friend who was passing away. She was not a member of the Church, and had not been baptized. There, sitting by her dying bed, I realized the result of some of the teachings of "Mormonism," and I thanked God with all my heart that the glories of that religion had become my priceless possession, thanked Him that I was a "Mormon," and so leaving the soul of her I loved in the hands of a loving Father, I attended to her present needs, and did what I could to smooth her pathway through the valley of death. What brought this peace to my soul at such a time? How was it that, knowing she had not obeyed Christ's command to be baptized, I had no fears for her? I was a "Mormon," and so saw with eyes from which the film of darkness had been removed. I knew that the Gospel was being preached to the spirits in prison, and that the work of salvation was going on in the spirit world as well as here. I knew that the ordinances of the house of the Lord would be performed for her, and that she would have the opportunity of accepting the truth and of entering into the kingdom of God. This knowledge took away the sting of death, and gave me a peace that passeth all understanding.”
