While Mary Isabella Horne's husband was away, her eldest daughter became severely ill and her life was despaired of. Lucy Mack Smith, the mother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, visited the home, administered to the child, and declared that she would live. The account notes that this was an unusual occurrence for the time, as it was rare for a woman to perform such an administration, but the child recovered.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in Anonymous, 'A Representative Woman: Mary Isabella Horne,' Women's Exponent 11, no. 2 (June 15, 1882): 9):
Here her eldest daughter was taken very ill, and her life despaired of, in fact it seemed impossible for her to get better. The mother of the Prophet, Mrs. Lucy Smith, came and blessed the child, and said she should live. This was something new in that age, for a woman to administer to the sick, but the Lord blessed the administration and manifested his power in behalf of the child, and she speedily recovered.
