Sister Eliza Boon Eggertson endured severe physical and emotional strain while acting as the primary caregiver for her invalid husband, who suffered from a broken back. Under the immense pressure of these duties, her own health failed; specifically, she began to experience progressive eye failure. Despite seeking medical assistance, standard treatments proved ineffective, and the doctors eventually relinquished hope for her recovery, warning that she faced certain blindness due to extreme eye strain. Furthermore, the option of a surgical procedure was ruled out because she was physically unable to undergo it. Throughout this period, Sister Eggertson maintained an undying faith in God, continuing to plead for her sight through persistent prayer. Her turning point came after she observed a complete day of dedicated fasting and prayer. Shortly thereafter, she experienced a distinct improvement in her vision, and the debilitating eye strain subsided. When she later returned to the doctors for a formal examination to determine the status of her eyes, they were astonished to find them in a healthy, almost perfect condition. They questioned her, asking who had been providing treatment for her eyes; Sister Eggertson, knowing the source of her recovery, understood that it was the result of divine intervention rather than medical care.

In Their Own Words

“Medicine had failed and doctors had given up, but the faith of Sister Eggertson waxed strong. Despite her faith and prayers her sight grew less and less. Still with that undying faith in God she continued to plead with Him for her sight. A few days later, following a complete day of fast and prayer, her sight began to improve and her eye strain seemed to leave. She visited the doctors to ascertain the exact condition of her eyes. Upon examination they were amazed to find them in a healthy, almost perfect condition. They asked her who had been treating her eyes. They didn't know, but Sister Eggertson did. — The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 99, No. 25 (1937)”
