Elizabeth H. Mayho's Healing and Spiritual Comfort via Gift of Tongues

While living in Nephi, Utah, Elizabeth H. Mayho became discouraged after struggling to find work. Her husband, Mr. Mayho, was so discouraged that he vowed to return to England and actually left for a time. Elizabeth fasted and prayed for three days that the Lord would lead her husband to where they were meant to be. During this period, she attended a Relief Society meeting where a sister spoke in tongues and another interpreted it. The message promised Elizabeth that the Lord would lead her husband to a place where he would find work, that she had a great mission to perform among the young of Zion, that she was guarded by heavenly beings, and that if she remained faithful, she would be blessed with abundance. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Mayho found work at woollen mills in Provo after a chance encounter, and the family subsequently relocated and prospered.
In Their Own Words
“I fasted three days and prayed often. At the end of three days I went to a Relief Society meeting where not a soul knew that he had left Nephi. It was a testimony meeting and I felt that there was the gift of tongues in the room. I don’t know why, as I had never heard that gift, but after a little while a sister got up and spoke in tongues, and the moment she commenced I was seized with the strangest feeling, as if I were electrified through my whole body. When she sat down another sister arose and interpreted it. She said it was a blessing for Sister Mayho, and she told that the Lord had led Mr. Mayho just where he wanted to make a mighty woman of me, as I had a great mission to perform amongst the young of Zion. I was told to be of good cheer as I was guarded night and day by Heavenly beings, that the angels were pleased with me, and that if I would be faithful the Lord would bless me with abundancs of everything. — Millennial Star 62:8”
