During the protracted wars between the Lamanites and Nephites, in the 30th year of the judges, Helaman sent an epistle to Moroni recounting the events involving two thousand young men—sons of the people of Ammon who had formerly covenanted not to shed blood. To protect the Nephite nation, these youths took up arms, and Helaman agreed to lead them. In the 26th year, Helaman marched them to the city of Judea to assist the Nephite commander Antipus, whose forces were depleted, exhausted, and losing ground. To lure the powerful Lamanite army out of their stronghold in the city of Antiparah, Helaman and his two thousand 'stripling' soldiers executed a stratagem, marching as if to transport provisions. The Lamanite army pursued them for several days into the wilderness. Eventually, the Lamanites turned back to fight the army of Antipus, who was being overwhelmed and had fallen in battle along with many of his leaders. Facing a desperate situation where the weary Nephite forces were about to be destroyed, Helaman and his two thousand men returned to the fray. They fought with such miraculous strength that they terrified the Lamanites into surrendering. Helaman later reported to Moroni that these young men had been taught by their mothers that God would deliver them if they did not doubt, a faith so profound they declared, 'We do not doubt our mothers knew it.' Remarkably, after the intense combat, Helaman discovered to his great joy that not one soul among his two thousand sons had fallen to the earth.
In Their Own Words
“And now it came to pass in the commencement of the thirtieth year of the reign of the judges, on the second day in the first month, Moroni received an epistle from Helaman, stating the affairs of the people in that quarter of the land. And these are the words which he wrote, saying: My dearly beloved brother, Moroni, as well in the Lord as in the tribulations of our warfare; behold, my beloved brother, I have somewhat to tell you concerning our warfare in this part of the land. And it came to pass that we have had no small difficulty in keeping the city of Judea; but behold, we have kept it. And we have been reinforced by the armies of the Nephites, and also by the two thousand sons of the people of Ammon. And they are all young men, and they are exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this is not all—they are men who are true at all times in whatsoever thing they are entrusted. Yea, they are men of truth and soberness, for they have been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him. And now it came to pass that Helaman did march at the head of his two thousand stripling soldiers, to the support of the people in the borders of the land on the south by the west sea. And thus were the people of Nephi exceedingly rejoiced, because the Lord had again delivered them out of the hands of their enemies; therefore they did give thanks unto the Lord their God; yea, and they did fast much and pray much, and they did worship God with exceeding great joy. And now it came to pass that I, Helaman, did march at the head of these two thousand young men to the city of Judea, to assist Antipus, whom ye had appointed a leader over the people of that part of the land. And it came to pass that we did meet with many afflictions and much difficulty. But behold, my two thousand sons, they fought with such miraculous strength that they terrified the Lamanites into surrendering. And it came to pass that I did return, and under the most miraculous circumstances, I discovered that not one soul among my two thousand sons had fallen to the earth; yea, and they had received many wounds; nevertheless they stood fast in that liberty wherewith God had made them free; and they are strict to remember the Lord their God from day to day; yea, they do observe to keep his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments continually; and their faith is strong in the prophecies concerning that which is to come.”
