Ora, living on a remote ranch, was caring for her four-year-old son, Charlie, who had contracted diphtheria. Marooned by a massive blizzard, she was unable to reach a doctor. While praying and keeping a light in her window, a lost aviator who had crashed his plane in the mountains and had been crawling for two days in the snow saw her light and reached her cabin. Ora nursed him back to consciousness, and in return, he rode her horse through the deep snow to alert neighbors, who contacted a doctor. The doctor arrived and administered the life-saving anti-toxin to Charlie.

In Their Own Words

“Suddenly the dog barked. Her heart leaped. Then he burst into clamor. She hastened to the door and pulled it open. A cold blast cut her like an icy knife. Her eyes sweeping the horizon, at some distance she saw a black object crouched on the white expanse of snow. As she watched it, it moved. She stepped outside and pulled the door shut after her. Slowly it crept on. In its clumsy movements it looked like a bear. Once it flattened out and lay still. As it approached the house it rose up like a man. She ran out. It was a man, swathed in a queer bundle of clothes and nearer dead than alive. — The Young Woman's Journal 34:12”
