The enemies of the Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City attempted to squat on public property and grounds, which were then fenced off to prevent further encroachment. In response, a number of these individuals made a surprise attack upon some of the brethren, which resulted in a 'thorough fright' for the attackers. The identity of the defenders is unknown, but the incident effectively stopped the harassment.

Fuller account of this event (the complete account as preserved in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 28, No. 46, 17 November 1866):

Some of the 'gentile' residents of Salt Lake City, having attempted to squat on public property, and having been prevented by the fencing of the grounds, made a surprise attack upon some of the brethren, which resulted in a 'thorough fright' to the assailants, and a very quiet time for the citizens since.

In Their Own Words

“The other night, a number of our brethren made a sally upon some of these parties, and gave them a thorough fright. It is not known who they were; but there has been some little excitement among a certain class in consequence, and they would like to fasten the instigation of these operations on me, if they could. — Millennial Star 28:46”
