Dr. George Washington Hickman, while traveling toward California, was intercepted by Johnston's Army, who suspected him of being a Mormon spy and took him into custody. His brother, William A. Hickman, acting as a Mormon scout, discovered his brother's plight, intervened to secure his release, and brought him into Utah. Following this rescue, William A. Hickman facilitated his brother's conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
