Ira N. Hinckley was called by Brigham Young in 1867 to build and manage a fort at Cove Creek, Utah, during the height of the Black Hawk War (1865–1868). Despite the fort's location in a volatile area and its role as a vital way station for travelers, the Pony Express, and telegraph lines, the fort was never attacked by Native Americans. The Hinckley family maintained peaceful, cooperative relationships with the local Pahvant Ute and Navajo people throughout the fort's operation.
