Gilbert Belnap: Mormon Battalion Veteran and Pioneer of Ogden (1821–1899)

Gilbert Belnap (1821–1899) was a Latter-day Saint pioneer who served in the Mormon Battalion, crossed the plains in the Warren Foote Company (1850), and settled in the Ogden area, where he served as a bishop, sheriff, and local leader of the Weber Stake. He is remembered as one of the 'stalwart Mormon pioneers' in the Sons of Utah Pioneers' Conquerors of the West, and his papers (1852–1897) are preserved in the Church History Library. Brother Belnap's life is a faith-promoting witness of the Battalion veterans who, after their march and their service, came west to build up the settlements of the Wasatch Front and to lead the Saints in peace.
