Joseph William Bates: A Member of the Mormon Battalion (1826–?)

Joseph William Bates (1826–?) was a member of the Mormon Battalion and a faithful Latter-day Saint pioneer. In January 1848, with three other Battalion members, he made his way west after his service, arriving in Utah on October 10, 1848. His biographical sketch, preserved in the Church History Biographical Database, records the sacrifice of the Battalion Saints who marched for their country and then gathered to Zion. Brother Bates's life is a faith-promoting witness of the Mormon Battalion—those who served, suffered, and then by faith found their way to the Saints' new mountain home.
