Lorenzo Argyle: Last Surviving Member of the First Pioneer Handcart Company (1856–1940)

Lorenzo Argyle (1852–1940) was believed to be the last surviving member of the first pioneer handcart company to come to Utah—the Ellsworth Company of 1856, which pioneered the handcart plan of emigration. He later served as bishop of the Lake Shore Ward and, on January 20, 1901, was ordained a High Priest by Apostle Reed Smoot. His long life reached back to the very beginning of the handcart era and the founding generation of Utah settlement; as bishop he shepherded the children and grandchildren of those first handcart pioneers, keeping alive the memory of their sacrifice and faith.
