Mons and Elna Larson Miraculously Provided with Bread and Fish When Provisions Ran Out

Mons and Elna Larson were a convert couple from Sweden who emigrated to Utah in 1859 as part of a pioneer company traveling westward. As the company progressed, their provisions began to dangerously run out. Company members were rationed to just one pint of flour per person per day. One evening, as the company camped near a river and food was critically scarce, Elna felt inspired to leave the campsite and walk to a tree about a mile away from camp. When she arrived at the tree, to her great surprise, she discovered a large pile of dry bread scattered on the ground. With great joy and gratitude, she gathered all the bread into her apron and returned to camp, weeping at this miraculous provision. That same evening, while Elna was out, Mons was fishing in the river and caught several fish. When both returned to camp with these provisions, the family enjoyed their first full meal in many days. The Church News recorded that this miracle of sudden provision sustained them until rescue and help reached the company. According to Elliot, grandson of Mons Larson, these divine provisions directly preserved their lives on the trail.
