Seth Johnson — The Miracle of the Flour in Escalante

During the winter of 1876–1877, the newly established settlement of Escalante faced a dire food shortage due to its isolation and heavy snows. As the community's leader, Bishop Seth Johnson gathered the Saints and exhorted them to exercise faith and share their remaining provisions with those in need. He promised the people that if they were generous and faithful, the Lord would not allow them to perish. According to family records, several families witnessed a 'widow's cruse' miracle where their small supplies of flour lasted throughout the winter despite constant use and sharing, sustaining the entire colony until the spring thaw allowed for new supplies.
