William Decatur Kartchner: Private, Company D — Battalion Veteran and Colonizer Whose Life Embodied Pioneer Faith (1823–1905)

William Decatur Kartchner was born in 1823 in Pennsylvania and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the early 1840s. He gathered with the Saints to Nauvoo and, when the Mormon Battalion was organized in July 1846, enlisted in Company D under Captain Nelson Higgins.

Kartchner completed the full Battalion march from Council Bluffs to San Diego — eight months through desert, mountain, and wilderness. After his discharge in July 1847, he returned to the Salt Lake Valley and began his life as a Utah pioneer.

What distinguishes Kartchner in the post-Battalion record is his subsequent role as a colonizer. He answered multiple calls from Church leadership to help settle new areas of the Great Basin, eventually participating in the establishment of communities in Arizona as the Church's colonization program extended south. The Kartchner family became prominent in Arizona's LDS settlements — a legacy of service that began with William's Battalion march in 1846.

Kartchner Caverns State Park in southern Arizona is named after the Kartchner family, whose homestead encompassed the cave system discovered in 1974 by Lew and Randy Kartchner — his descendants. The family's presence in Arizona traces directly back to William Decatur Kartchner's pioneering service.

For Latter-day Saints, this kind of multi-generational presence — a family whose roots in a place trace back to a Battalion veteran who answered a prophetic call — is understood as part of the covenant pattern: obedience in one generation produces blessing in the next.

William Decatur Kartchner died in 1905, having watched his family put down roots in the very Arizona territory he had marched through as a soldier in 1846.
