James Dunn: Private, Company C — Mormon Battalion Veteran Who Marched Under Captain Hunter and Settled Utah After the War (1820–1892)

James Dunn was born around 1820 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company C under Captain Jesse D. Hunter, completing the full 2,000-mile march from Council Bluffs to San Diego.

Captain Hunter's leadership of Company C was characterized by a deep integration of military duty and spiritual practice. Hunter had been in the Church since before the Missouri persecutions and brought a veteran's faith to his command. Under his leadership, Company C maintained the Battalion's spiritual disciplines — prayer, Sabbath observance, priesthood administration — alongside the demands of the march.

James Dunn was among the Company C soldiers who endured the full route: the Kansas prairie, the New Mexico desert, the Jornada del Muerto, the Arizona wilderness, and the final mountain crossing into California. The Battalion arrived in San Diego in late January 1847 having marched through winter conditions in the mountains — cold, exhausted, and intact.

After his discharge in July 1847, Dunn returned to Utah and settled there. He married and raised his family in the Great Basin, contributing to the pioneer community through years of labor and faith. He lived through the full pioneer era — from the early desperate years of settlement to the approach of statehood.

James Dunn died around 1892 in Utah. His completion of the Battalion march is confirmed in the official muster records, and his settlement in Utah places him among the founding generation of the Restoration's western expansion.
