Philander Colton: Private, Company A — Completed the Mormon Battalion March and Settled Cache Valley, Utah (1821–1897)

Philander Colton was born in 1821 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company A — the lead company of the Battalion — under Captain Jefferson Hunt.

Company A had the distinction of marching at the head of the column for much of the route. Captain Jefferson Hunt was one of the most experienced men in the Battalion and set a tone of faith and discipline that characterized Company A's march. Hunt's leadership meant that Company A's soldiers were often the first to face the unknown — the first into new territory, the first to encounter obstacles, the first to require the combination of physical endurance and spiritual reliance that defined the Battalion's march culture.

After his discharge in July 1847, Colton returned to Utah. He eventually settled in Cache Valley — the long, rich agricultural valley in northern Utah that became one of the territory's most productive regions. Cache Valley's early settlement was a deliberate Church program: Brigham Young sent proven men, including many Battalion veterans, to establish communities there in the 1850s.

In Cache Valley, Colton farmed, attended his ward, and raised his family among the Saints. He was part of the generation that transformed the Great Basin from a wilderness into a civilization — a transformation that Church leaders consistently described as a divinely directed enterprise.

Philander Colton died in 1897 in Utah, having spent five decades as a Cache Valley pioneer. His Company A service, at the head of the historic march, gives him a particular place in the Battalion's story.
