Henderson Cox: Private, Company E — Battalion Veteran Who Helped Settle Southern Utah After the March (1820–1895)

Henderson Cox was born around 1820 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company E, completing the full march from Council Bluffs to San Diego.

Company E was among the companies whose men were in the best physical condition at the end of the march — they had marched hard, prayed consistently, and maintained the discipline that Lt. Col. Philip St. George Cooke had demanded of them. Cooke, who was not LDS, later wrote publicly about the Mormon Battalion's character and discipline, calling them among the finest soldiers he had commanded.

After his discharge in July 1847, Henderson Cox returned to Utah. He eventually settled in southern Utah — possibly in the Iron County or Washington County area — as the Church's settlement program pushed south through the Great Basin in the 1850s and 1860s. Brigham Young consistently called Battalion veterans to help settle new areas, trusting men who had already proven their willingness to sacrifice.

Southern Utah's early settlements — Cedar City, St. George, Parowan — were founded by men of exactly this caliber: pioneers who understood hardship, who had already walked 2,000 miles in faith, and who were willing to walk another few hundred to build Zion in the red rock desert.

Henderson Cox died around 1895 in Utah. His Battalion service is confirmed in the muster records, and his settlement in southern Utah places him among the founding generation of one of the most remarkable colonization efforts in American history.
