Amos Cox: Private, Company E — Mormon Battalion Soldier Who Settled Utah County After the Continental March (1818–1892)

Amos Cox was born around 1818 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company E under Captain Daniel C. Davis, completing the full march from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California.

Company E's march took them through the same punishing terrain as the other companies: the scorching desert of southern Arizona, the rocky mountain passes of the Southwest, and the final descent into California. Captain Davis wrote that the men of Company E drew on their faith as much as their physical strength to complete the journey — and Amos Cox was among those who made it through.

The Cox family is well-represented in early Utah Church records. After his discharge in July 1847, Amos returned to the Salt Lake Valley and settled in what would become Utah County — the area around Provo and the surrounding communities. Utah County became one of the most densely settled LDS regions in the territory, and the men of the Battalion who settled there were among its founding generation.

Cox married and raised a family in Utah, living through the pioneer era, the Utah War of 1857–58, and the territorial period that preceded statehood. He attended his ward, paid his tithing, and built the kind of quiet, consistent life that the pioneer generation understood as its own form of testimony.

Amos Cox died around 1892 in Utah, having outlived his Battalion discharge by 45 years. His service on the march, confirmed in the official muster records, is his permanent entry in the story of the Restoration.
