Elias Brewer: Private, Company E — Completed the Mormon Battalion March and Settled in Utah's Sanpete Valley (1818–1896)

Elias Brewer was born in 1818 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s. He enlisted in the Mormon Battalion in July 1846 and served in Company E under Captain Daniel C. Davis.

Company E completed the full march from Council Bluffs to San Diego. Captain Davis later wrote that the men of Company E relied fundamentally on their faith to endure the physical extremities of the route. The company crossed the same waterless desert, the same mountain passes, and arrived in San Diego in late January 1847 with the main body of the Battalion.

After his discharge in July 1847, Brewer returned to the Salt Lake Valley. He eventually settled in Sanpete Valley — one of the major agricultural valleys of central Utah — becoming part of the generation of early settlers who transformed the area. Sanpete County became one of the most distinctly LDS regions of Utah, with a culture deeply shaped by the faith and sacrifice of its pioneer founders.

In Sanpete, Brewer attended his ward, served in whatever capacity he was called, and lived out the consequences of his decision to join the Church: a life shaped by covenant, community, and the ongoing demands of building Zion in a desert.

Elias Brewer died in 1896 in Utah, having lived long enough to see his valley become a settled, thriving community — a transformation he had helped bring about through decades of labor following his Battalion service. His name on the muster roll is his monument.
