Isaac James: Free Black Convert Who Crossed the Plains and Settled Utah as One of Its First Black Pioneers

Isaac James (January 5, 1820 – November 19, 1891) was born a free Black man in Monmouth County, New Jersey. At approximately 19 years of age — around 1839 — he was converted to the gospel and baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, making him one of the earliest Black converts in Church history.

Isaac made his way to Nauvoo, Illinois, where he met Jane Manning. After Joseph Smith's martyrdom in 1844, Isaac and Jane were married. Together, they joined Brigham Young's pioneer company and made the monumental trek across the plains to the Salt Lake Valley.

Isaac and Jane James, along with their sons Sylvester and Silas, were among the first free Black people to settle in Utah Territory. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on September 19, 1847 — just weeks after Brigham Young's vanguard company. Isaac worked as a laborer and coachman and contributed to the building funds of the Salt Lake Temple.

Isaac's conversion stands as a remarkable act of faith for a free Black man in antebellum America — a time when racial hostility was pervasive and the decision to join an unusual new religious movement required extraordinary courage. He and Jane together built a life in Utah, raised a family, and remained connected to the Church through profound difficulty.

His wife Jane wrote that she had outlived her husband and nearly all her children, but that her faith never wavered: 'The Lord protects me,' she wrote in her autobiography.
