Helen Mar Kimball Whitney documented Joseph Smith's compassionate ministry during the devastating cholera outbreak at Commerce, Illinois in 1839. She recorded: 'The Prophet visited and administered words of consolation and often made tea and waited upon them himself and sent members of his own family who were able to go, to nurse and comfort the sick and sorrowful.' Joseph's personal ministry to the sick demonstrated his Christ-like concern for the suffering of the Saints.
