While ordaining eleven native converts in Calcutta, William Willis asked Brother Meik to select three candidates for the offices of Priest, Teacher, and Deacon without informing him which man should hold which specific office. When Willis returned, he proposed casting lots to determine the assignments. The results of the lots perfectly matched their private, unspoken thoughts, which Willis interpreted as a testimony that the spirit of unity and truth presided over their administrations.
In Their Own Words
“Before they were confirmed, I had requested brother Meik to select three for the purpose of ordaining to the offices of Priest, Teacher, and Deacon ; he did so, but did not mention to me which of them should be called to which office, and when I re-entered the room, I proposed to cast lots as to who should hold the different offices ; the lots were used, having been prepared, and as they were opened, they were found to be exactly answering to our private arrangements, which caused much astonishment in our midst ; nevertheless: it was a testimony to me that the spirit of unity and truth presided over our administrations. — Millennial Star 14:18”
