While traveling on a train from Underwood to Omaha, a Utah missionary (referred to as the narrator's brother-in-law's companion) was traveling to visit relatives who were not members of the Church. He found himself inexplicably seated next to a gentleman who, by a remarkable coincidence, also turned out to be a Mormon from Utah traveling to visit his own relatives to share the gospel. The brother later prayed for the safe journey of the missionary.
In Their Own Words
“I was traveling from Underwood to Omaha, and as I stepped into the car, I found it crowded. On turning to enquire of the conductor if there were vacant seats in the next car, a middle-aged gentleman with a courteous air arose and invited me to share his seat. I took the chair which was previously occupied with parcels and baskets. Then the gentleman enquired how far I was going. Unhesitatingly, I told him to Omaha. He then remarked, 'So am I; I have been in this country visiting relatives. I have come many miles to see them.' At this I grew interested and enquired which part of the Union he came from. 'My people here,' said he, 'do not belong to the Church and I have always been anxious to extend my knowledge of the gospel to them, so I came from Utah expressly to do so.' Strange that the one man in the car to make room for me should be a Mormon. I felt that the Lord had directed my steps, and I thanked Him for the privilege of meeting a brother in the faith, and for the comfort and strength his presence gave me.”
