Kynnli, a young sister missionary from Draper, Utah, had never planned on serving a mission. It was not until her older brother left "out of nowhere" for his own mission — a striking step for their family, since none of their extended family were members of the Church — that she watched him change and thought, "I want that." When her mission call came, she chose to open it alone first, at a place her family had made sacred: her grandfather's grave, the same place her brother had opened his mission call before her. There she prayed, telling the Lord she knew she would be sent where she needed to be, but asking, half-scared and half-hopeful, for Him to send her somewhere remarkable. When she opened the envelope she read "Tahiti Papeete Mission" — the exact mission her brother was then serving. The family had already planned a trip to visit his mission. She had grown up in French immersion since the second grade, speaking the very language of that mission, while her brother had gone into it with none. She wept at the coincidence, feeling that "the Lord needs me where my brother went." At the family opening that evening, she read the assignment aloud without telling her brother in advance; he picked her up and swung her around as the whole family sat in shock at the once-in-a-generation call. Siblings being called to the same mission is so rare that neither she nor the interviewer had ever heard of another instance.

In Their Own Words

“"I went to my grandpa's grave... and I just said a prayer and I was like, I know I'm going to be called where I need to be, but I'm so scared... And I opened my call and I read Tahiti Papeete Mission and I was floored cuz that's where my brother served actually... the Lord needs me where my brother went." — Kynnli, LDS Mission Stories interview, "LDS Missionary Tells Stories of Unbelievable Miracles | Tahiti, Papeete Mission"”
