While scouting for the pioneer company near the Platte River, William Empey went hunting for antelope. Upon ascending a hill, he looked down onto a flat and discovered a war party of approximately 400 Native Americans who appeared to be lying in wait to ambush the pioneer company. Empey immediately returned to the scouting party to warn them, allowing the company to signal that they were armed and prepared, thereby preventing a potential attack.
