In April 1856, while skinning a poisoned animal, Wilford Woodruff inadvertently contracted blood poisoning, which quickly spread through his system. By April 29, his condition was life-threatening: he was unable to stand, required two people to lead him to his bed, lost his ability to speak clearly, and experienced a cessation of his stomach and bowel functions. His wife and friends provided intensive care, including emetics, injections, and raw onion poultices. That evening, President Brigham Young and Dr. Samuel L. Sprague visited and administered to him; Brigham Young rebuked the disease and the power of the destroyer, promising Woodruff that he would not die but would live to finish his appointed work. Following this blessing, the poison and mortification were drawn from his system and centered in his arm, where they were subsequently extracted using charcoal poultices moistened with a decoction of wormwood, ragweed, and wild sage. The dead flesh was later removed from his arm using surgical instruments and lunar caustic, leading to his full recovery.
In Their Own Words
“President Young called, in company with Dr. Sprague, and laid hands upon me, and rebuked the disease and the power of the destroyer which had seized my body, and promised me in the name of the Lord, that I should not die but live to finish my work which was appointed me upon the earth. — Autobiography 1865 Millennial Star, Wilford Woodruff Papers”
