In the spring of 1854, the child of the Indian chief Walker was sick. Walker believed that if the child died, the mother would also have to die. In response, the Latter-day Saint authorities at Provo provided him with $75 worth of stock and property to offer as a sacrifice, after which the child recovered.
In Their Own Words
“The natives are at peace with us, and with each other, and the Lord is still blessing us with the choice blessings of heaven and earth... The authorities at Provo thought it best to bend to his humor, and accordingly gave him about $75 worth of stock and property, and he retired satisfied. It is a custom with the Indians, when their enemy is sick, to torture them; hence the remark of Walker, when his child was sick last spring, that, if it died, its mother would have to die also. — Millennial Star 16:46”
