Sister Campbell, a member of the Kimberley branch in South Africa, was severely ill. After the branch was closed and the elders left for Cape Town, her fourteen-year-old son wrote to President Nicholas G. Smith stating there was little hope for her recovery and asking for the elders to administer or pray for her. During the next Fast meeting in Cape Town, President Smith offered a public prayer for her healing. Three days later, President Smith received a letter from Sister Campbell stating that on that Sunday at one o'clock, she experienced a sudden change, felt 'absolutely well,' and was able to get out of bed, clean her house, and cook a meal, remaining healed thereafter.
In Their Own Words
“The elders had been in Kimberley, South Africa, for years and had gathered a few faithful saints around them. The Government action in prohibiting Mormon elders from landing had reduced us to a few men and we were forced to close the Kimberley branch. When the elders left for Cape Town, a Sister Campbell was ill and she continued so. About three months later I received a letter from her fourteen-year old son, in which he told me that there was not much hope of her ever getting up again. They needed her so badly that they wanted the elders to come and administer to her, or if that couldn't be done, to pray for her in fast meeting in Cape Town. When the next Fast day arrived we held our meeting immediately after Sunday School and in the opening prayer I pleaded with our Heavenly Father for a blessing for that boy's mother and asked Him to reward his faith. Three days later I received a letter from Sister Campbell herself, in which she said, 'President, on Sunday just at one o'clock a change came over me and I felt absolutely well. I got out of bed and felt so strong that I straightened up the house, for it was badly in need of it, and then I cooked a meal for my family. I knew that you had prayed for me and that the Lord had answered the prayer for I was healed.' And she remained healed.”
