After exhausting his physical strength in the Reformation of 1856, Jedediah M. Grant experienced a severe illness. He told Heber C. Kimball that he had been into the spirit world for two nights. He described the perfect order and government of the spirit world, noting he saw righteous men and women in their several grades with no obstructions to his vision. He saw his wife, who looked beautiful and held their infant child who had died on the plains. He also saw families that were not permitted to dwell together due to lack of honoring their calling on earth. He remarked that the buildings he saw were superior to Solomon's temple. He died on December 1, 1856.
In the same account, Grant noted that the people he observed were organized in family capacities, and he remarked that he saw many families that were not permitted to dwell together due to a deficiency in honoring their callings on earth. He also described the spiritual landscape, noting that the gardens were far superior to any on earth, featuring flowers with up to a hundred different colors growing on a single stalk. Grant further stated that after returning to his body, he could perceive the spiritual state of his family and the darkness within them, noting that when he tried to converse with them about the Gospel, they were indifferent to his message.
In Their Own Words
“I laid my hands upon him and blessed him, and asked God to strengthen his lungs that he might be easier, and in two or three minutes he raised himself up and talked for about an hour as busily as he could, telling me what he had seen and what he understood, until I was afraid he would weary himself, when I arose and left him. He said to me, brother Heber, I have been into the spirit world two nights in succession, and, of all the dreads that ever came across me, the worst was to have to again return to my body, though I had to do it. — Heber C. Kimball, Remarks at the Funeral of President Jedediah M. Grant, December 4, 1856, in Journal of Discourses 4:135”
