On 10 May 1852, a catastrophic colliery explosion occurred at the Middle Dyffryn pit in the Aberdare Valley near Cwmbach, Wales. The disaster claimed 67 lives, including 19 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, among whom were Ebenezer Morris, the president of the Cwmbach Branch, and several of his family members. In the chaotic aftermath of the blast, survivors were faced with thick, suffocating dust that hindered escape. One unnamed Latter-day Saint brother, finding himself trapped amidst roughly thirty others who had essentially given up, felt a profound spiritual impression that his time to die had not yet come and that he was destined to reach Zion first. Acting on this conviction, he took the handkerchief he used to carry his food, wetted it, and held it over his mouth as a makeshift filter against the toxic air. Through this method, he was able to navigate through the dust and walk out of the mine to safety. His survival was documented in the 5 June 1852 edition of the Millennial Star by Welsh mission leader William Phillips, who noted that the man remained in good health following his miraculous escape.
In Their Own Words
“One brother said, when thirty had given themselves up to be smothered (there was such a dust after the fire,) “I am not to die, I must go to Zion first, so I am going out;” then he wetted his handkerchief (which he had to carry his victuals) and plaistered it on his mouth to prevent the dust from smothering him, and walked out well, and he is now quite well. — Millennial Star 14:15”
