Elder Edgar W. Jeffery, while serving as the Birmingham conference president, was threatened by a group of Birmingham University students who entered the chapel to disrupt a meeting. After praying for divine protection, Jeffery engaged the group in discussion, successfully silenced the hecklers, and defended the Church, with the opponents later admitting they had intended to break up the meeting but were overcome by the respectful treatment they received.
In Their Own Words
“On the evening of March 2nd, last, the Birmingham Mutual Improvement Association met for the purpose of holding its regular weekly session. Being weary, and not feeling well, I retired to rest. I had been in bed but a short time when word was brought to me that a large number of strange men had entered the chapel, evidently for the purpose of making trouble, and that the female members of the association were very nervous. I arose, dressed, and after offering up a prayer for wisdom and divine protection, went to the meeting-room, where I found between sixty and seventy strangers—Birmingham University students. . . . I defended the Prophet Joseph Smith, and notwithstanding I was frequently interrupted, I was able, with the help of the Lord, to finally silence our opponents. I had come off victorious, according to the promise made me by a servant of the Lord. — Millennial Star 84:15”
