While herding sheep in the Elk Horn Mountains, Stephen Theobold encountered a she-bear and her cubs. He shot the bear, which fell as if dead. When he approached the cubs, the bear revived and charged him. As he prepared to defend himself, the bear dropped dead just feet away, sparing his life.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 47, No. 37, 14 September 1885, p. 590):
Brother Stephen Theobold, while herding sheep in the Elk Horn Mountains, had a narrow escape from death. He came upon a she-bear and her cubs, and, as is usual in such cases, she showed fight. He fired at her, and she fell as if dead. Thinking the danger over, he approached the cubs, when the mother, who had only been stunned, revived and made a furious charge at him. Thinking that running would be useless in such close quarters, he reversed his gun and prepared to club her when she attacked him, but to his infinite relief and surprise she dropped dead when within a few feet of him.
In Their Own Words
“Thinking that running would be useless in such close quarters, he reversed his gun and prepared to club her when she attacked him, but to his infinite relief and surprise she dropped dead when within a few feet of him. — Millennial Star 47:37”
