Brigham Young recounts a missionary journey in December with his brother Joseph where they crossed the ice from Gravelly Point to Kingston. The ice was thin, bending under their feet with water half a shoe deep, and they had to separate because it could not hold both at once, yet they traveled six miles safely.

In his autobiographical history, Brigham Young specifies that this journey occurred in December 1832. After crossing the ice, the brothers proceeded to West Loboro where they remained for about one month, baptizing approximately 45 souls and organizing the West Loboro and other branches.

In Their Own Words

“In company with my brother Joseph, I started for Kingston, Upper Canada, on foot in the month of December, the most of the way through mud and snow from one to two feet deep. In crossing from Gravelly Point to Kingston, on the ice which had frozen the night previous, the ice was very thin and bent under our feet, so that in places the water was half shoe deep, and we had to separate from each other, the ice not being capable of holding us. We travelled about six miles on the ice, arrived in Kingston, and found a friend who was going that evening near the place where we were first to call. We proceeded to West Loboro, where we remained about one month, baptized about forty-five souls, and organized the West Loboro and other branches.”
