During a meeting for young ladies at the Salt Lake City Hall, Sister Eliza R. Snow spoke in tongues under the influence of the Spirit. Mrs. Zina Young provided an interpretation of the tongues, which contained a message of blessing, a prophecy that many present would one day speak to other nations in their own languages, and a caution not to treat these manifestations lightly. Elder Thomas Wallace also spoke in tongues, with Mrs. Zina Young providing the interpretation.

Fuller account of this event (as retold in The Latter-day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 36, No. 9, 3 March 1874):

Sister Snow then spoke in tongues under the influence of the spirit of the Lord, and exhorted the young girls present to arise and bear their feelings in regard to the Gospel, fearless of all present, also to lead pure lives, to be honest and truthful, and to pursue the course that leads to peace, honor and salvation. Mrs. Zina Young gave the following interpretation of the language spoken: 'My heart is overflowing with gratitude to God for the sight which I now gaze upon. As I have said in my own language, so now the spirit helps me to express in another. My soul is full of joy and praise to God for that which I now behold. I see before me the mothers of the future, the daughters of Zion, who are to be the mothers of the noble and the great. By the same gift that was then bestowed, I now proclaim that many of those now present, shall go forth and speak to other nations in their own languages, and many of these little ones shall yet speak forth, in other tongues, words of gratitude and praise to God for this day.' Elder Thomas Wallace then spoke in tongues, and Mrs. Zina Young gave the interpretation, which was a blessing upon the young ladies, and a caution to them not to treat lightly the manifestations of the Spirit of God, but to treasure them up in their hearts, and live so as to be worthy of them.

In Their Own Words
