S. Vickers, living in Calgary, Alberta, describes her experience with the gospel. Despite being pressured by her mother, brothers, and sisters—who threatened to renounce her if she continued to attend 'Mormon' meetings—she maintained her faith. She describes finding comfort and strength in reading the Millennial Star and the 'Songs of Zion' in secret when she could not attend meetings.
In Their Own Words
“I know that I have been tried since I came here. My brothers have followed me to the meetings. My sisters have told me that my boy would live to curse me for taking him amongst the "Mormon" people. My mother has told me that if I continue to go to the meetings, my brothers and sisters will renounce me forever; but one thing is sure, they will never change my religion. I know I have found the truth, and I shall remain steadfast to it. I have been asked by my friends why I joined the "Mormons." I tell them I have found the truth, and that is enough for me. When I lived with our people I had to go upstairs to read it; but that did not matter. I have read every word of them. One Sunday I went upstairs and shut my door and got my Star and "Songs of Zion," and I quite enjoyed myself. In fact, I quite forgot I was amongst non-"Mormon" people until I went out of my room and my sister called me "Mormon." I said, "Oh, yes, I have had quite a time to myself. If I can't go to meeting, I will have a meeting of my own."”
