In 1834, following the return of Zion's Camp, a woman whose husband was away in the South and who was in a state of sorrow and uncertainty about his condition, sought counsel from Joseph Smith. She asked if her husband was living or dead. Joseph Smith looked downward for a moment and then told her that her husband was not dead, but sick and had company, and that he would return home in three weeks. The husband returned exactly three weeks later, emaciated but alive.

Fuller account of this event (in the witness’s own words):

The incident occurred sometime after the Prophet's return after leading Zion's Camp into Missouri, in 1834. I was in Kirtland at the time near his residence. A sister in the Church, whose husband had gone south with intent to return direct to his home in the east, at a stated time, but who had failed to put in an appearance at that time, and of whom nothing could be ascertained, went to the Prophet and asked him whether her husband was living or dead. He cast his eyes downward for a moment, then looking up, said: 'Your husband is not dead, he is sick, and has company; he will be home in three weeks.' Just three weeks from that time the emaciated husband and young man arrived.
