When Joseph Smith needed to purchase a chest to house the gold plates, the family had no money. His mother told him God would provide, and Joseph sought work, immediately obtaining a job digging a well which paid in cash, fulfilling his mother’s prophecy of divine providence.

In Their Own Words

“Joseph now had to provide for the family, and he went to work for a man by the name of Josiah Stoal, who lived in Chenango county, and who had come for Joseph on account of his having done some work for him in digging for a silver mine, some time previous. This gentleman, in the time of the busy season, also requested Joseph to work for him, and he accordingly went to Chenango. While he was there, he was told that he must get a chest made, in order to have a place to deposit the plates, when he should obtain them. It was soon after this that he returned home to make arrangements for the chest. He said to me, 'Mother, I have been thinking about the chest that I am to get, but I do not know how I am to obtain the money to pay for it.' I told him that I did not know, but I felt assured that the Lord would provide a way. He then said, 'I will go and see if I can get some work, and perhaps I shall succeed in getting the money.' He went out, and, as he was walking along, he met a man who asked him if he would like to dig a well. Joseph told him that he would, and the man engaged him to dig a well, and promised to pay him in cash. He returned home, and told me that he had obtained the work, and that he should have the money to pay for the chest. He then went to work, and, in a short time, he had the money, and the chest was made.”
