During the early years of the Great Depression, Mary Thomas Jeppson and her husband Leland moved to Canada to homestead land. Facing extreme poverty and despair during the Christmas season, Mary sat by a dying fire reading the Bible. The account, compiled by her daughter Marian Jeppson Walker, describes a moment of divine provision where the family's desperate situation was relieved, serving as a faith-promoting 'Christmas miracle' that sustained them through their hardships.
Fuller account of this event (as retold in Mary’s Christmas Miracle – Curious as a Cathy):
It was December of 1927 in the remote prairie town of Hillspring, Alberta, Canada. After the socks had been hung, Mary had read the Christmas story from the Bible to the children and then recited a few Christmas poems from memory — memories of her own happy childhood living in the United Sates. She was the next to the youngest of a very large and loving family. Don’t ask why, I just can’t tell them that. It was midnight.
